The Arch of Hope at Future Dreams

Posted by Olivia Phillips on 18 April 2024

Future Dreams House was decorated with over a thousand hand-made roses to raise funds and give support to those going through breast cancer.

Future Dreams is proud to unveil a beautiful 10 foot tall multi-coloured Arch of Hope created from individual knitted and crochet roses. The flowers were made by members of our yarn therapy group as well as sent to us from craft groups and individuals across the UK who wanted to pledge their support to the breast cancer community.

They were all knitted from a wool created especially for us by West Yorkshire Spinners with a percentage of sales going to Future Dreams. It is hoped that the project could raise in the region of £20,000.

The arch was unveiled on Wednesday March 20 to mark the first day of Spring. Many of the roses were dedicated to loved ones who have been touched by breast cancer. You can see some of the powerful messages HERE. Many thanks to the tech team at our partners Estee Lauder Companies for creating this.

The yarn therapy group threw a special tea party at the house to celebrate the amazing body of work. Knitting and crochet not only helps mindfulness and alleviating stress but also eases neuropathy, which can be a side effect of chemotherapy leaving those affected with pins and needles and numbness in their hands and fingers. “It has been a wonderful achievement, everyone has worked so hard,” said Nicky Weller, one of the founders of the yarn therapy group. “It felt absolutely amazing to open all these packages from across the country from like-minded women supporting the Makeathon. We literally filled Future Dreams House with flowers.”

The Makeathon was the brain child of the Future Dreams team and Danielle Deane, Business Development Manager from West Yorkshire Spinners who has been through breast cancer herself.

“It was fantastic talking to different knitting groups about the project and seeing people want to get so involved,” said Danielle.  “I couldn’t believe it when I walked through the arch into Future Dreams House and then saw flowers everywhere I looked.”

Donate to those touched by BREAST cancer

Sylvie and Danielle began Future Dreams with just £100 in 2008. They believed nobody should face breast cancer alone.  Their legacy lives on in Future Dreams House.  We couldn’t continue to fund support services for those touched by breast cancer, raise awareness of breast cancer and promote early diagnosis and advance research into secondary breast cancer without your help.
