Fiona decided to fundraise for two charities and give her 60th birthday event a purpose other than celebrating herself. “I wanted to mark the end of my treatment which although gruelling is so far successful and also celebrate a milestone birthday so it was the perfect occasion to raise awareness and funds for two very important charities.” Fiona Jordan, Fundraiser.
Fiona had been through eighteen months of treatment for Triple Negative Breast Cancer, that she had found out of the blue despite her yearly mammograms and no hereditary risk, but the end of treatment coincided with a big birthday. “I really wanted to celebrate with my friends and family especially as living seemed more precious than ever.“
Instead of gifts from friends and family what was important to Fiona was raising funds and awareness, so she made an ask to her nearest and dearest to donate to Future Dreams and The Royal Marsden in lieu of any birthday presents.
Together with the support of her loved ones, Fiona raised over £11,000 for both charities.
When deciding on which charities to fundraise for, Fiona chose The Royal Marsden where she had her treatment for Triple Negative Breast Cancer, and Future Dreams. She felt she wanted to give back to a place that gave her much care during treatment and feature Future Dreams to raise awareness of the support needed for those touched by breast cancer not just during but life after cancer too.
“I was really hit by the robbing of identity that so often occurs with breast cancer treatment and saw that Future Dreams assists on so many levels, walking in the doors felt like a sanctuary amongst like-minded women.“
The actual party was an easy event for Fiona to organise and when it came to the special day she could share the moment with those closest to her.
“However the journey has taken me to understand what is important and indeed cancer puts everything into perspective.”
If you have been diagnosed, or know somebody who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, Future Dreams hold a range of support groups, classes, workshops and events to help support you with a breast cancer diagnosis. These are held both online and in-person at the London-based Future Dreams House. To see what’s on offer and to book your place, click the link below.
Sylvie and Danielle began Future Dreams with just £100 in 2008. They believed nobody should face breast cancer alone. Their legacy lives on in Future Dreams House. We couldn’t continue to fund support services for those touched by breast cancer, raise awareness of breast cancer and promote early diagnosis and advance research into secondary breast cancer without your help. Please consider partnering with us or making a donation.
